Herpesviridae is a linear dsDNA virus that causes disease in animals, including humans.
The members of this family are known as the herpesviruses.
In our syllabus, we learnt about :
-alphaherpes: HS1 virus, HS2 virus & varicella zoster virus
-betaherpes: cytomegalovirus
-gammaherpes: Epstein Barr virus

1) Herpes Simplex Virus: cold sores ard mouth(1wk), affects eyes & gums, genital herpes, burning sensation.
- HSV1 (cold sores) - oral cavity
- HSV2 (genital herpes) - genital
2) Varicella Zoster Virus: fever, lesion all over body, scratched lesion leads to secondary infection, scarring, affects nervous system.
- Varicella (chicken pox) - respiratory tract, pharynx
- Herpes Zoster (shingles) - 2nd infection
3) Cytomegalovirus - saliva, urine, semen, cervial secretion, breast milk
4) EBV - nasopharynx, salivary gland
