This first post will be a summary on Virus Classification/Taxonomy.
Since viruses are largely pseudo-living in nature, they do not neatly fit into the biological classification system for cellular organism.
Therefore, virus classification is based on its genome or physical properties. The physical properties includes the nucleic acid of the virus, symmetry of capsid, dimensions of virion and capsid and the presence/absence of envelope.
The two types of classification are:
Lwoff's Scheme for Classification - which makes use the physical properties of the virus.
Baltimore's System for Classification - which makes use of the virus genome and its assoc. to mRNA.
Baltimore System for ClassificationVirus can be placed in one of the following groups:
Class I: dsDNA viruses
Class II: ssDNA viruses
Class III: dsRNA viruses
Class IV: (+) sense ssRNA viruses
Class V: (-) sense ssRNA viruses
Class VI: ssRNA-RT viruses
Class VII: dsDNA-RT viruses
